Welcome to the 5th installment of Atlassian's plugin development competition: Codegeist V. This year we're upping the ante by giving away the best prizes yet, including the biggest single cash prize ever: $15,000 for the Grand Prize winner and $15,000 for the Community Prize! We've lined up a total of $30,000 in cash, along with more prizes we'll announce in the next few weeks.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to 1) build an mind-blowing plugin, extension, client or other integration for one (or more) of Atlassian's products, 2) create a kick-ass video demo of your entry and upload it here and 3) spread the word to the whole Atlassian community so they can vote for you!

As previous entrants might have noticed already, we've made a few important changes to Codegeist this year:

  • We're strongly encouraging all entrants to submit a video demoing your plugin or integration. We think that a screencast is a great way to really demonstrate the power of what you've built. (But you needn't limit yourself to just a screencast -- get creative!)
  • Codegeist is now open to commercial plugins as well as open-source plugins. In previous years, you were required to open-source your submissions. No longer! We'll accept and judge based on your best demo of the plugin, regardless of whether it's open-source or commercial. As long as your plugin was built during or after AtlasCamp 2010 (October 11, 2010), you can submit it.
  • We're introducing two new technologies as developer previews: the new ActiveObjects plugin data storage framework and Speakeasy Extensions, front-end plugins so easy anyone can write them. To encourage you to try out these new platform capabilities, there are category prizes for the best use of each technology.
  • We're letting the Atlassian community vote on entries. We'll be watching these votes and factoring in to our judging, so it will really pay to get your demo up early.
  • We're introducing a Community Prize worth $15,000 in cash, given to the most voted plugin. However, we'll only give away the Community Prize if we get at least 2,000 total votes across all submitted plugins. That is, your plugin does not need at least 2,000 votes to win. Instead all submitted plugins across the entire competition need to total 2,000 votes. So when you finally submit that plugin of yours, be sure to tell your friends and ask them to give you a vote. And be sure to submit your plugins early! Early submissions have more time to get voted by the community, increasing your chances at grabbing the Community Prize and $15k in cash.

Take a look at the requirements for more info, including getting started docs, submission guidelines, and everything else you'll need to know.

Entries are due at midnight (PDT) on Monday, May 16th.

We've had some great entries in the past. Check out the winners from Codegeist IV:

Contest Requirements

Getting Started

Getting started is simple: take a look at our development guides and start hacking.

As you're building your plugin, don't hesitate to give us feedback about anything and everything. We're committed to making plugins as easy to build as possible, so please tell us how we can be doing a better job. In particular, this is the first time that SpeakEasy Extensions or the ActiveObjects plugin data storage framework will have been used outside of Atlassian, so please don't hesitate to send us feedback or report bugs. You can give us Speakeasy feedback and ActiveObjects feedback.

And be sure to get involved in the Developer Network to communicate with your peers and competitors.

Submission Requirements

Create a video (we recommend Youtube) or a set of screenshots that demonstrate your plugin and put your plugin on the plugin exchange. Note that the presentation of your plugin is as important as the engineering, so be sure to spend time creating good videos and screenshots. That's why we highly recommend creating a video, because it's a much more powerful way to communicate a product than screenshots.

Submission Instructions

  1. When you are ready to submit your plugin click the "Enter" button at the top-right of this page. If you have more than one screenshot or video, include a URL to additional videos and links in the description of your submission.
  2. We recommend using Youtube videos if possible
  3. Add your plugin to the plugin exchange.

Once you submit you will not be able to change your submission! In a competitive environment it's unfair to be able to change an entry. If you really want to change an entry, you can delete your entry and re-add a new one. Although doing so will lose all votes you've accumulated.

Judging Criteria

The judging criteria is simple: make something awesome. In general we'll be looking at the following qualities:

  • Usefulness
  • Creativity and elegance
  • Completeness

Our judges will factor the community voting into their assessment of your plugin -- the more people who think your plugin is awesome, the better. So get the word out and encourage people to vote!

Important: we'll only accept plugins first published after AtlasCamp 2010 (October 11, 2010).

Community Prize Fine Print

We'll only give away the Community Prize if we get at least 2,000 total votes across all submitted plugins.
